How Evening Walks in South America Inspired Kentucky’s Favorite Gelato

Are you on a mission to find the best ice-cream in Kentucky? In the heart of Kentucky, where the rolling hills are dotted with horse farms and the spirit of southern hospitality is alive and well, Spotz Gelato has carved out a sweet spot in the local culinary scene. This family-owned business, founded by the dynamic husband-and-wife team of Philip Enlow and Beth Richardson, has become a beloved fixture in central Kentucky, offering handcrafted gelato that rivals the best Italy has to offer.

A Sweet Dream

Realized

The story of Spotz Gelato begins with a love for travel and a penchant for quality food. While managing successful careers in the corporate world, Philip and Beth also ran a hobby farm, raising grass-fed beef cattle and pastured pigs. Their travels to Central and South America introduced them to the delightful world of gelato, a discovery that would change their lives. "During our trips, we found that the best part of our evenings was wandering down the street to the local gelato shop," Beth recalls. "We wondered why we couldn’t replicate the great gelato we had on our trips with Kentucky products."

Back home in Georgetown, Kentucky, the couple experimented with local ingredients, creating small batches of gelato for family gatherings. Their creations were a hit, and before long, friends and family urged them to take their gelato to a wider audience. Thus, in 2013, Spotz Gelato was born.

The Heart of Spotz Gelato

What sets Spotz Gelato apart is its unwavering commitment to quality and local sourcing. "All of our recipes feature Kentucky Proud products, even the milk in our gelato comes from Kentucky cows," Beth emphasizes. Each batch of gelato and sorbet is made by hand in their farm's commercial kitchen, ensuring freshness and flavor without any artificial additives.

Spotz Gelato offers a delightful variety of flavors, from classics like chocolate and cookies n' cream to unique concoctions like Reese Cup cheesecake and blueberry sorbet. The ever-changing menu reflects the seasons and the couple's passion for experimenting with new recipes.

A Taste of Italy on Wheels

Spotz Gelato's charm extends beyond its delicious offerings to its distinctive presentation. The brand is known for its fleet of vintage food trucks, each lovingly restored and adorned in the company’s signature hot pink. These trucks, with names like "Humpback Hazel" and "Disco Dottie," travel to festivals, weddings, corporate events, and private parties across Kentucky, bringing a taste of Italy to the Bluegrass State.

"We are still tickled pink to do what we do," Beth shares, reflecting on their journey from hobby farmers to gelato entrepreneurs. Their trucks and scoop shops have become a beloved sight at local events, and their gelato is often hailed as the best in Kentucky.

Expanding the Sweetness

Spotz Gelato has grown from its humble beginnings to include several scoop shops in Georgetown, Versailles, Shelbyville, Midway, and LaGrange, as well as a location in Las Penitas, Nicaragua. Each shop offers a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere where customers can enjoy their favorite flavors in cups, waffle cones, milkshakes, and even Sundae Boards.

The couple's dedication to their craft and their community is evident in every scoop they serve. "Everything is produced at our manufacturing kitchen located on our farm in Scott County," Beth notes, underscoring their commitment to local ingredients and sustainable practices.
